Extensive residential development within the Canary Wharf Estate is driving interest from purchasers further afield, ahead of the completion of the area’s brand new residential district, Wood Wharf. North London resident, Kevin Tang, is one such buyer, having purchased an apartment with his husband in Wood Wharf’s new landmark development, One Park Drive. With a strong interest and knowledge of architecture, Kevin was intrigued by the building’s striking geometric design and impressed by the area’s vibrant and richly diverse landscape.
As a trained interior designer and experienced property developer and investor, Kevin has purchased a one-bedroom apartment with his husband, Geff Parsons, who is a banker and has recently been ranked 23rd in the top 100 LGBT + Executives list from the Financial Times. The couple intend to use the property as a pied-a-terre whilst they split their time between London and Vancouver. Having lived in North London for a number of years, the couple never considered Canary Wharf as a place to live, until learning that leading Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, had chosen it as the location for their first ever UK residential project.
Kevin says, “What first attracted me to Canary Wharf was the news that Herzog and de Meuron would be designing a building there. I’m a huge fan of their other projects, such as the Tate Modern extension, the Beijing National Stadium and their work on 56 Leonard Street in New York. Their designs are really one of a kind and I can’t wait to live in their first residential building in the UK. There is really nothing else like this in London.”
The couple chose the highest one-bedroom apartment on the 53rd floor in the Bay typology, which occupy levels 33 – 57; the upper floors of the building. Bay apartments boast double-height terraces set back into the building, and enjoy natural light which comes with their elevation, along with stunning views of the surrounding riverside and across wider London. The interiors have been masterminded by luxury firm Goddard Littlefair, who has used exposed concrete walls, timber panelling and natural stone to create a calm and elegant atmosphere.
Kevin and Geff were also attracted to the great transport linking including the opening of Crossrail in Canary Wharf, when it opens. Boasting a journey time to the West End of sub-15 minutes, Canary Wharf has become one of the best-connected destinations in the capital. Journeys to Liverpool Street will take six minutes, an excellent commute for Geff who works in the City.
After spending more time in Canary Wharf, Kevin and Geff have been impressed by the wide variety of cultural and entertainment offerings in the area, many of which are free. These vary from one of the UK’s largest public art collections, to outdoor cinema screenings, concerts, comedy nights, food markets and sporting events. These are supplemented by over 300 shops, bars and restaurants spread over five malls, including the award-winning Crossrail Place, one of London’s biggest roof gardens.
Kevin says, “In the past Canary Wharf was seen solely as a business district and not somewhere you would think to spend your free time, but in recent years it’s gotten really exciting with loads of things to do in the evenings and at weekends. We visit often now and are really looking forward to spending more time there once our new apartment is ready.”
