Making nature part of wharf life

For the past 30 years, we have been exploring ways to make Canary Wharf as sustainable as possible. Now, our ambition is to use our neighborhood as a living test bed to discover how urban spaces can help tackle biodiversity loss, pioneering places where nature and people thrive.

Partnering with Nature Experts

We know we cannot do this alone. Therefore, Canary Wharf Group has partnered with the nature experts at the Eden Project. Together, we have developed a programme to improve access to outdoor spaces, help people use the waterways, and improve biodiversity by providing new habitats for wildlife and increasing the number of plant species in the area.

We have introduced over 800 species of plants and trees and created 16.5 acres of gardens and parks. There’s Crossrail Place Roof Garden, Canada Square Park, where you can watch film screenings, and Montgomery Square, home to ping pong and minigolf. Try yoga in Harbord Square Park, enjoy 5km of waterside boardwalks or go swimming, paddleboarding or boating with GoBoats on Canary Wharf’s waterways.

A New Urban Ecosystem

From October, there will be another beautiful space on offer: Middle Dock is being transformed into a haven of seamlessly-integrated pontoons and islands. This masterplan was implemented by award-winning architecture firm Howells, based on a strategy conceptualised by sustainability consultant Greengage, which advised on how to improve air quality, provide shade, and use aquatic plants and artificial reefs to create a dynamic ecosystem that enhances urban biodiversity.

Canary Wharf is being reimagined as a place where nature and people thrive. Come and enjoy it.
