Community Gallery: Young @ Arts
Ribeiro’s oil cityscapes, which bear the influence his ancestral home of Goa had for him, were used as a stimulus for the ‘Young@Arts’ Over 50s Social Care group. Local Artist Mürüde Mehmet asked the members to carve and paint ceramic tiles of places or buildings that had a personal resonance for them, which acted as a catalyst to draw out their stories. One lady revealed her memories as a child evacuee, another recalled her friend’s wartime wedding, in a dress made from parachute silk. Several opted for the only realistic oil portrait he ever did in 1963 – that of his wife.
