Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over a Syrian Greek king who had tried to force Jewish people to give up their religion. After the Jews reclaimed the desecrated Temple in Jerusalem, they went to rededicate the Temple and re-light the eternal lamp, but there was only enough oil for one day. A miracle happened and the oil lasted eight whole days, the time it took to retrieve more oil with the seal of the High Priest.
Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting a special nine-branched candle holder called a Hanukkiah. There are eight candles to represent each of the eight days of the miracle as well as a ninth ‘shamash’ or ‘helper’ candle in the middle to help light each one. Hanukkah is a publicly celebrated festival, a festival of miracles and religious freedom.
You can visit our Hanukkiah in Jubilee Park at the heart of the Canary Wharf estate. The central shamash and the first candle will be lit at 4pm on the evening of Sunday 14 December with the remaining candles lit each evening at the same time up until Monday 22 December.
