Dr Pippa Wood PhD, empowering women to improve their self-esteem through exercise at Third Space
When Dr. Pippa Wood Phd, psychologist and personal trainer, moved from the tranquil Gold Coast in Australia to London six months ago, she knew she wanted more than the city’s usual rush. “I remember having a little walk around Canary Wharf and going, yes, the energy of this place is just where I want to be,” she recalls. “I didn’t want to be a million miles an hour. There’s something about the pace here that felt right.”
For Pippa, Canary Wharf offered the perfect environment to bring together her expertise in psychology and fitness. “I work as a psychologist and a personal trainer, so I try to bridge that mind-body gap with the work I do. And I felt like Canary Wharf was going to be an awesome spot, especially at Third Space in Wood Wharf, with the wellness focus. It’s a great hub to meet new people and connect with the community.”
Despite the area’s reputation as a bustling financial district, Pippa quickly discovered its hidden pockets of calm. “A lot of people I meet, I’m always like, ‘oh, what brought you to Wood Wharf?’ And they’re like, ‘I just needed a mental break. It’s so peaceful and tranquil around here. It’s hidden away a little as well.’ From the waterside walks to the facilities at Third Space, the setting offered a sense of balance she hadn’t expected. “I love the arc and the plunge pools and the community they’re building down there. And then the restaurants on the water are beautiful. I was missing Australia a little bit, but dining out in the sunshine by the water takes me right back there.”
Pippa also highlights the social and community side of Canary Wharf. Events like Run The Wharf have helped shift perceptions of the area. “That actually helped my friends shift their mindset, because they just made this association between Canary Wharf and finance, they thought it would cost a fortune to do anything here. Whereas we had such a fun night, just being out in the grass in that main area, having drinks and food, and then doing the run. It was electric. There was a community feel to it. Everyone was supportive and encouraging. It was very social.”
For Pippa, wellness is as much about mindset as movement. “You’ve got to be in the right environment and then move your body in ways that make you feel good too. I’ve worked predominantly with females on body image, and something I’ve noticed is the role exercise plays. It can be really empowering if we’re moving in ways that aren’t so focused on aesthetics, but more like yoga and Pilates, getting in tune with your body, or strength training, and feeling empowered in that sense.”
Her approach emphasises balance and enjoyment. “So it feels like it’s a relaxing experience, where you can just detach and unwind at the end of your day, instead of it being another hectic, strenuous thing you have to add to your to-do list.”
For Dr. Pippa Wood PhD, Canary Wharf is more than a workplace or fitness destination – it’s a place where energy, ambition, and wellbeing coexist, offering spaces for reflection, connection, and movement.
