Show the woman in your life how much you care this Mother’s Day
When did Mother’s Day begin?
Did you know that Mothering Sunday was originally a 16th century Christian event that, rather surprisingly, had no connection to mothers at all? The word ‘mothering’ referred to the ‘mother church’ whereby Christians were encouraged to attend a special service on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The modern-day Mother’s Day that we are all familiar with was founded in 1908 in America by Anna Jarvis, who campaigned successfully to have a day to commemorate mums and mothering figures.
When is Mother’s Day this year?
Mother’s Day is on Sunday 14 March 2021.
What gift should I get – I’m stuck forideas?
The hunt for a thoughtful Mother’s Day present can be a tricky one – especially as non-essential shops are currently closed – however we’ve done the hard work for you and consulted Canary Wharf’s retailers to come up with an edit that will show her how much you care; simply order online or click and collect where possible.
So, scroll on for inspiration on delectable foodie treats, blissful beauty products and at-home experiences that are bound to make her feel extra special and appreciated this year.
Jewellery
A wearable item such as a bracelet, earrings or necklace makes for a keepsake that can be treasured for years to come. Monica Vinader has a range of pieces to choose from; click here for its Mother’s Day gift guide, and there’s also the option to engrave a message onto some of them too for a further sentimental touch. The brand also does complimentary virtual styling appointments – book through its website if you need a little help with choosing.
Elsewhere, if you’re taking Mother’s Day quite literally, Goldsmiths features designs made from mother of pearl – such as those from Danish designer Skagen. Meanwhile Pandora puts on all of the charm with its trinkets, as well as a Family Tree collection. Finally, for those looking for an extra special gift, book an appointment in-store with David M Robinson while fine jewellery brand Vashi is offering digital consultations.
Chocolate
Whether it’s sitting down and enjoying a cup of tea and a bar of chocolate on a weekend or as an afternoon mid-week treat, indulge her sweet tooth this Mother’s Day. Hotel Chocolat has a range of gifts; from its popular H-Box to its luxurious ‘Best Mum’ collection, virtual tasting experiences to cocoa gin, check them out here. Meanwhile you can’t go wrong with a simple box of chocolates – or push the boat out with the ‘Best of Godiva Hamper’ from Belgian chocolate brand Godiva. Chocolate truffle enthusiasts will be delighted to receive a box from Charbonnel et Walker; its Pink Marc de Champagne Truffles will without doubt make you the favourite child!
Perfume
Perfume is a gift that mums can wear on a daily basis and acts as a thoughtful present; whether it’s her favourite fragrance or a new scent, every time she wears it, it will be a reminder of the sentiment that has gone into it. Jo Malone London has a variety of colognes to choose from, as well as limited editions such as its new Blossoms Collection which has two brand-new fragrances that celebrate the beauty of the hibiscus flower: Yellow Hibiscus, a beaming and juicy light floral and Red Hibiscus, a vivid solar floral and the fragrance house’s first Blossom Cologne Intense – it is sure to get her looking ahead to spring.
Elsewhere, need a little advice when it comes to picking the perfect present? Penhaligon’s is offering live video consultations, while you can also look on its website for something to suit every budget; from its Little Luxuries to the Grand Gestures selections.
Beauty
There’s nothing quite like a big bubble bath to unwind from a busy day. Make it that extra bit more relaxing by gifting Spa of the World Tahitian Tiaré Bath & Shower Oil-In-Gel from The Body Shop, a Tranquility Scented Candle by Neom at Space NK and an Instant Renew Concentrate Mask from Kiehl’s – she’ll be feeling good as new in no time. And after a long soak in the tub, mum can have some further me time by relaxing in a robe from The White Company and these cosy slippers from Waitrose & Partners.
