National Fitness Day

Wednesday 21 September marks this year’s National Fitness Day – a day that celebrates the important role that physical activity plays on our physical, mental and social wellbeing. Not only is it a chance to highlight and raise awareness of how we can lead healthier lifestyles through being physically active, but it can also act as a springboard to encourage people to try a whole of host of new activities. And where better to do this than Canary Wharf? Whether it’s overhauling your fitness regime or simply trying a new class, we’ve got you covered this National Fitness Day and beyond…

For a whole-body and lifestyle approach, how about signing up for membership at Third Space Canary Wharf? The epitome of the high-end health club, not only does it offer three floors of state-of-the-art training facilities and an impressive 210 classes per week, it also has Europe’s highest indoor climbing wall and a 23-metre pool. What’s more, this National Fitness Day and the day after (21 and 22 September), Third Space and lululemon have teamed up to hold a special vinyasa yoga class located at Canary Wharf’s panoramic Crossrail Place Roof Garden. Led by one of its expert instructors, there are only 20 spaces available at each class – book your spot here – and be ready to work hard, build up a sweat and leave feeling energised both physically and mentally. Plus, you’ll depart the class armed with a lululemon goody bag – bonus. Tickets are £10 and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the mental health charity Mind.

After a challenging workout? Barry’s will certainly put you through your paces in its renowned Red Room. Said to burn more than 1,000 calories per one-hour class, the high-intensity interval session is based on the simple idea of shocking your body with a combination of strength and cardiovascular exercises. And this National Fitness Day why not involve your colleagues too? Switch the boardroom for the Red Room for a team workout – after all, teamwork makes the dreamwork.

If it’s more group training you’re looking for, check out In2Sports, which is a newcomer to Canary Wharf. A purpose-built sports and leisure facility equipped with a Sports England designed sports hall, gym fitness room, training suite and more, it’s ideal for hosting all types of sports-based events, from football tournaments to team building activities.

Alternatively, Sweat By BXR leads from the top – after all, it’s inspired by stakeholder and renowned heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. Its flexible class-based training is based around three key pillars: strength and conditioning, cardiovascular exercise and skills-development; and is designed for anyone at any stage in their fitness journey.

  • Act the Part, Look the Part

  • Train Well, Eat Well

After working up a sweat it’s important to refuel the body; pick up a fresh protein shake from Natural Fitness Food. Plus there are plenty of other healthy drinking and dining options on the Estate to complement your new fitness regime, including Kaleido’s reinvention of the salad in wrap form. Alternatively, you can count on Urban Greens for flavoursome salads, Island Poké for fresh Hawaiian bowls and Poké House at Wharf Kitchen for Californian-style poké. And if that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, don’t forget to check out other healthy eating options from the likes of Pure, Birleys Salad Bar, Garbanzos, Farmer J, Grill and Pilpel.
