AOP Awards 2019
The Association of Photographers (AOP) is the leading organisation for those working in the creative image-making industry. Its members include professional photographers, assistants, students, photography courses and colleges, companies, affiliated businesses and agents. Established in 1968 by a group of photographers who came together to address issues affecting them, the AOP has become one of the most highly regarded photographic bodies in the sector, lobbying on behalf of photographers’ rights, and instrumental in obtaining changes in the Copyrights Act introduced in the 1980s, providing copyright protection to photographers as creators.
2019 will mark the 35th anniversary of the AOP Awards. Held since the 1980s, the Awards were devised as a showcase for the best in professional photography by AOP members. They were quickly joined by the Open Awards, aimed at non-members, to encourage the development of non-professional photographers. The Student Awards soon followed, open to all students studying photography, a competition that has become a springboard for emerging photographers, helping them get their first major break into the industry. In 2014 both the member and open categories were combined into one main competition.
The 2019 exhibition at Canary Wharf will include the finalists of the AOP Awards 2019 as well as displaying last year’s Student Award winners, together illustrating the great work taking place across the sector.
The winners of the 2019 Awards will be announced on May 14 at a special event, dovetailing with Photo London Week 16 – 19 May.
