Breaking The Plastic Habit – 12 months on

On World Environment Day 2018 we launched www.breakingtheplastichabit.co.uk, a 12-month behavioural change programme, aiming to create a new culture of reduction, re-use and recycling to challenge single-use plastic within Canary Wharf. It forms part of our wider sustainability strategy, ‘Making Sustainability Real’, which addresses the current economic, environmental and social needs of our stakeholders and anticipates those of tomorrow.

Our unique ‘micro-city’ status creates the perfect opportunity to pilot new technologies, spark innovation and collaboration, and encourage behavioural change as a model for commercial centres, businesses and communities nationwide. We partnered with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), one of the UK’s leading environmental charities and committed to become the world’s first commercial centre to gain their Plastic Free Community status accreditation.

Canada Place event:

As part of the celebrations marking 12 months of Breaking The Plastic Habit, on World Environment Day the Making Sustainability Real Team will be in Canada Place Crossroads. Visit our stand throughout the day to find out more about the impacts the programme has had, as well as a chance to vote on our interactive pegboard, and tell Canary Wharf what issues you would next like to see them. Our innovative Breaking The Plastic Habit vending machine will also be distributing prizes throughout the day as a way of thanking individuals for supporting the programme!

Business event

On World Environment Day, to mark 12 months of our Breaking The Plastic Habit programme, we’re hosting a celebratory event at Level39, One Canada Square. A panel of experts will be part of a Youth Takeover – a line-up of Eco-Ambassadors formed by local school children. Moderated by Surfers Against Sewage CEO, Hugo Tagholm, the children will put their questions to the experts and challenge them on the issue of single-use plastic and how they are taking action. The panel includes Morgan Stanley, ‘Plastic Game Changer’ Author, Amanda Keetley, and more, who will discuss their recent achievements and what the future holds as the plastic free movement grows on a global scale, and public consciousness widens to include other climate change issues such as air pollution, the theme of this year’s World Environment Day.

We’ll also be updating on our progress to achieve Plastic Free Community status, as we share insights into the full impact and lessons learned from the first 12 months of Breaking The Plastic Habit, as well as sharing how tenants and the wider community of Canary Wharf can get involved to ensure the continuation of the programme’s success. The event will be followed by an opportunity to network over drinks.
