Presented by the Grand Union Orchestra
Trading Roots brings together many of the Grand Union Orchestra’s core musicians – British artists from the world’s major musical traditions, all well-known in their own right – into a single ensemble. As the title suggests, the aim is to create original music from sharing ideas and techniques from the musical cultures they were born and brought up in.
Composer/director Tony Haynes (piano/trombone) has skillfully blended ancient Chinese classical show-pieces and the folk-songs of distant regions with the ragas, time-cycles and inflected vocal styles of India and Bangladesh, African and Latin rhythms, unexpected harmonic twists and plenty of improvisation to produce highly original music. Trading Roots brings these strands together in imaginative new ways.
